May's High Tea

“May” Kullapat Kanokwattanawan, known to be a cake and tea enthusiast, is the author of the lovely book, May Made: Cake Book, and another one which will be on newsstands anytime soon. On pleasant and sunny days, May usually goes out to explore different places, chilling out and tasting cakes and sipping tea, stating that these venues give her inspiration to bake cakes and come up with the original recipes of “May Made”.

The weather was just perfect enough for us to tag along and see which places inspired and motivated her.

“I love to make desserts but never attended any classes or courses like most people have done. I normally make them myself, figuring out my own recipes since I was a child. Besides the desserts and cakes I adore so much, I am an avid drinker of all kinds of tea. When drink with some tasty cakes, it will surely make anyone happy.” (May smiles)

With that said, she drove me off to the first place, Baan Phra Arthit, where they serve food, coffee, tea and desserts in an ambiance that is relaxing and comfortable. May loves to sit and order one of two teas here, either the English breakfast or the Peppermint, with a side of Red Velvet cake and some low fat chocolate cream. The combination is light and delicious beyond what words can explain.

The second stop was “Ruen Bussaba High Tea” and the name speaks for itself that customers should come in the early afternoon. Today, May’s selection was Earl Grey because it went well with the scones. Imagine warm scones baked out of the oven with some cold, sweet jam spread on top – the crisp outside with the soft inside would taste delightful with a cup of intense Earl Grey.

In the late afternoon, May likes to go to “Nero” in the Khao Sarn area. May’s favorites here are the syrup pecan cake layered with some thick white cream sauce. It tastes the best with a cup of Darjeeling tea because May has learned that something sugary sweet coupled with a drink that is strong and a bit bitter is just the right touch.

Just drinking a cup of nice tea can make someone very happy on a relaxing day like this!
